It is found in temperate regions of Asia, Europe and America, and its used part is the rhizome and spreading roots. In Iran, there are six different species of this genus, which are found in different parts of the Alborz mountain range and the northern and northwestern regions. In temperate and humid regions, valerian grows wild in sparse forests, on the banks of streams and ditches, in marshy places and in pastures. Its distribution in mountainous areas is such that it usually does not rise above 100 meters on the slopes, so that it can rarely be seen at altitudes of 2000 meters. The root of this plant is a short and cylindrical rhizome, and the rhizome of the plant is 2 centimeters thick. Many fleshy and cylindrical branches, 2 to 5 millimeters thick and 10 to 15 centimeters long, originate from the rhizome.
